Gateway Urban Center Kicks Off Healthy Happy Hour Series

COVINGTON, KY — Gateway Community and Technical College has begun a new Healthy Happy Hour Series of fun, informative family activities at its Urban Center in downtown Covington at 525 Scott Boulevard. The activities are free of charge and open to the public.

“The activities are designed to help Covington become a healthier, happier community,” said Michael Lee, Gateway director of inclusion and cultural initiatives. “They are part of our outreach to bring the community into Gateway where we make success happen.”

The series began May 7 with Zumba classes that continue for another five weeks on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. “It’s not too late to come and have fun in these Latin-inspired, dance-fitness classes led by licensed instructor Y’Vonne Burkart,” Lee said.

Remke bigg's transferring prescriptions to Walgreen's

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)- Remke bigg's has announced it is transferring all of its prescription business to Walgreens effective May 21, 2013.

"The pharmacy industry has changed to the point that there needed to be an investment into upgrading our systems to keep pace with the industry and to serve our customers at the level we felt was necessary to continue our legacy of exceptional service," said Remke bigg's CEO Bill Remke. "This investment would have distracted us from our main goal of delivering high quality, fresh food, local products and outstanding service."

Remke bigg's will continue to offer a professional butcher in every store, source produce locally when possible, and offer freshly made bakery, homemade deli selections and expanded organic offerings, health, beauty care and wellness products.

Remke bigg's prescription files will transfer to Walgreens May 21, 2013 with no interruption in service and care.  

Tractor-trailer makes tight turn, gets stuck in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19)- A flatbed tractor-trailer carrying pipe got stuck making a tight turn at Pelly Road and Fowler Creek Road in Independence overnight.

It was around 1:30 when the truck was turning onto Fowler Road and the rear wheels went over a guard rail and the rear portion of the truck got hung up on a piece of concrete.

A wrecker was called to help move the truck.

Northern Kentucky Police Memorial honors fallen officers

COVINGTON, KENTUCKY (FOX19) - Local police officers killed in the line of duty were honored on Wednesday at the Northern Kentucky Police Memorial.

The community remembered 37 local officers who put their job before everything else to keep the public safe. FOX19's very own Stephanie Woods was there to read off those names.

The ceremony even recognized the first officer to be honored on one of the newest additions to the memorial. Nickolas Bodkin was killed while responding to a disturbance at a bar in 1902.

His extended family, including his great grandson Steve Bodkin, were in attendance.

US Dept. of Labor to assist CVG Comair workers

WASHINGTON, DC (FOX19)- The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a $2,774,736 National Emergency Grant to assist about 350 workers
affected by the closure of Comair at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky
International Airport in Erlanger, Ky. 

The funding will provide employment
services to affected workers who reside in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. 

"Workers who have the skills and training employers need right now
have greater success finding jobs," said acting Secretary of Labor Seth D.
Harris. "The federal grant announced today will help former Comair workers
better position themselves for available jobs in growing industries." 

This
grant is being awarded to the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development
Cabinet to provide training and support services to the affected workers. Comair was a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines.

Covington Catholic alum establishes new scholarship

PARK HILLS, KY (FOX19) - Covington Catholic High School announced the establishment of the Elmer B. and Ruth C. Maschinot Cleves Scholarship to benefit the school’s tuition assistance program.

A 1944 graduate of Covington Catholic, Elmer Cleves excelled both in the classroom and in athletics. After graduation, he played professional baseball in the Canadian League as a catcher and went on to manage minor league teams in the U.S. After leaving baseball, Mr. Cleves worked in chemical engineering ultimately starting his own company, Interlube Corporation, in 1969. Interlube is an international distributor and manufacturer of industrial specialty lubricants and cleaners.

The scholarship is named after Mr. Cleves and his wife of fifty-five years, Ruth Maschinot Cleves.

Mr. Cleves also established a scholarship at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills two years ago at the passing of his wife, a Notre Dame Academy graduate.
