COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, KY has long been dedicated to serving the community. In recent years, community service coordinator Bill Snyder has focused much of the service program on Northern Kentucky residents with physical and mental disabilities, primarily through collaboration with the Special Olympics and “The Point/ARC of Northern Ky.”

CCH, often recognized for excellence in academic and athletic programs, has chosen to channel the energies of its athletes through service to children and adults with special needs. Most recently, the Cov. Cath. basketball team, led by coach Mike Listerman, scheduled a day of play with Point basketball program participants at John G. Carlisle Elementary School. Players were matched up with special needs adults to shoot baskets and have fun.

Covington Catholic also supports ongoing activities through the Point and Special Olympics.

Darius Harris gets heavy sentence for killing

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - A man convicted of killing a Covington shopkeeper was given a 40-year prison sentence Monday.

27-year-old Darius "Slim" Harris of Cincinnati was only convicted after his first two trials earlier this year and in 2008 ended in mistrials as some jurors held out. That streak came to an end last month.

Harris is convicted of killing 40-year-old Haithan Asad. The shooting happened one night in 2006 as Asad was working alone in his tiny store, the Madison Mart, along Madison Avenue in Latonia. He was found some time after the shooting.

Happy birthday to the Carnegie

Happy birthday to the Carnegie

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - In the 1970's, it seemed as if the historic Carnegie library and auditorium on Scott Boulevard might soon become a parking lot.

The Covington Library had moved to its new, modern headquarters down the street, and the auditorium section of the building had been shuttered for a couple of decades, with mold, vines, and even trees growing under the damaged roof.  It was a sad situation for one of the few Carnegie libraries, built with donations from U.S. Steel founder Andrew Carnegie, that included an auditorium.

Now the group that was formed to restore and operate from that space is about to celebrate its 34th birthday. The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center will do that at a gallery opening on January 7th, 2011.

The group was formed in the mid-70's, and reopened the building in 1977. It is now Northern Kentucky's largest multi-disciplinary arts organization.
