Covington Pools to open June 8

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19)- It is pool season again and The City of
Covington is happy to announce that the three public pool locations within the
city are opening on June 8.

Pool access is free for Covington residents in
possession of a pool pass. Pool passes are currently available at City Hall, in
the Recreation Department, 638 Madison Avenue, First Floor, and will be issued
from this office Monday through Friday, 8am- 4:30pm through August 9.

Additionally, pool passes will
be available seven days a week, beginning Saturday, June 8 through Sunday, June 16,
at each of the pool locations from noon-6:00pm; the Covington Waterpark
location will offer extended hours until 7pm. Residents will be required to
provide proof of residency in order to obtain a pool pass.

Library hosts pancake eating contest

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19)- The Kenton County Library hosted a pancake eating contest on Tuesday to promote its Racing to Read 5k Run and Walk, which benefits childhood literacy.

The contest was held at First Watch in Covington.

The 10th annual Racing to Read run/walk is Saturday, June 8 at 9 a.m. The race begins in front of the Covington branch of the Kenton County Public Library. Race registration includes a T-shirt and pancake breakfast from First Watch. Register online at www.kentonlibrary.org/race or on the day of the event.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Library's early childhood literacy program.

Hyde Park Square Art Show awards four scholarships

The Hyde Park Square Art Show, the largest one-day art show in Greater Cincinnati, has awarded four scholarships of $2,500 each to area students majoring in the arts at Cincinnati-area colleges and universities.

The winners of the scholarships are Alex Beard, Norwood; Alaina Hartman, Cincinnati; Katie Dobson, Cincinnati and Tyler Griese, Park Hills, KY.

Beard attends Xavier University and is on track to receive a bachelor of fine arts degree in the spring of 2014 with a concentration in fibers and a minor in art history. Alex is planning to attend graduate school at New York University for a master’s in art conservation.

Hartman is a senior at the College of Mt. St. Joseph with a double major of English and Art. She plans to earn a master’s degree in education to teach both Art and English at the high school level.

More suspects arrested in Covington drug roundup

COVINGTON, KENTUCKY (FOX19)- Covington Police have arrested more suspects in a large drug round up.

According to the Covington Police Facebook page, two suspected drug dealers were arrested overnight Tuesday and another was arrested over the weekend. A vehicle was also seized.

Covington Police have been fighting back against the war on drugs over the past several weeks.

Officers are looking for drug traffickers involved with pills, heroine, and cocaine.

"It's good for the simple fact that there's kids out here playing around. It's just a lot going on, especially on the corners and I think it'd be good to clean it up," Lauren Cauther, Covington resident.

Lauren Cauther lives right near where some of the drug busts happened Thursday. She says she's not surprised to see yet another drug sweep in Covington.

"Yeah it's always been like this. It's pretty bad, I think it's gotten worse over the years," said Cauther.

19 fatalities reported on Ky. roadways in one week

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19)- Officials say 19 people died on Kentucky roadways last week, according to preliminary statistics.

It happened in 18 separate crashes from Tuesday, May 28 through Sunday, June 2. 

Kentucky State Police (KSP) say the statistics are preliminary as local law enforcement throughout the state continue to report any crashes and fatalities that may have happened in their areas.

Those same statistics indicate 236 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways since the beginning of 2013, which is 75 fewer than reported for this time
period in 2012.

As of June 2, Kentucky has had 39 days with zero highway fatalities reported in 2013.

Drivers can help with highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to KSP at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and
should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and
license number if possible.

Police say the woman inadvertently pressed the gas instead of the brake pedal as she was pulling into a parking stall at the Fifth Third Bank at 1701 Dixie Highway. 

No one was hurt.
