Gateway Urban Center Kicks Off Healthy Happy Hour Series

COVINGTON, KY — Gateway Community and Technical College has begun a new Healthy Happy Hour Series of fun, informative family activities at its Urban Center in downtown Covington at 525 Scott Boulevard. The activities are free of charge and open to the public.

“The activities are designed to help Covington become a healthier, happier community,” said Michael Lee, Gateway director of inclusion and cultural initiatives. “They are part of our outreach to bring the community into Gateway where we make success happen.”

The series began May 7 with Zumba classes that continue for another five weeks on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. “It’s not too late to come and have fun in these Latin-inspired, dance-fitness classes led by licensed instructor Y’Vonne Burkart,” Lee said.

INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) - A day for family fun is coming to the Durr barnch Library in Independence.

The Durr Library Car Show & Family Fun Festival is on Saturday, May 11 from 11am - 2pm.

Sixteen cars will be on display at the William E. Durr Branch Library Car Show. Awards will be given for Best of Show, People’s Choice and Library Choice. Awards announced at 1 p.m.

The Family Fun Festival includes games, treats, a whip cream pie eating contest, the bearded librarian and the Florence Community Band musicians.

The event is free but everyone is encouraged to bring a donation of school supplies.

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The 2012-2013 Carnegie in Concert Series concludes with an evening of big band music led by the celebrated Carmon DeLeone.

The concert is scheduled for Thursday, June 13 at 7:30pm.

Tickets for Carmon Deleone and the New Studio Big Band are $19; $16 for Carnegie Members, WVXU Perks and Enjoy the Arts Members and students.

OLD, NEW, BORROWED, BLUE will feature hits from all these greats and heat things up with a unique jazz journey that includes twists on popular hits by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Sting, James Brown, Maroon Five and Eddie Van Halen, among others.

Salvation Army ARC Auxiliary holding “Celebrating Spring” fundraiser

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) Auxiliary will host an annual event, which benefits The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center, will be held Thursday, May 9th, 2013.

The event includes a silent auction, Kitchen Korner shop and luncheon.  Special guest speaker for this year’s luncheon is Dr. O’dell Owens, President of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.  The event will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Covington, starting at 11:00 am.

“It’s a wonderful event to support the men at the ARC,” stated Jill Hoff, president of the ARC Auxiliary.  “Our group of dedicated ladies has been active for more than 55 years, and we are delighted to walk alongside The Salvation Army as they seek to help men with substance abuse and other issues turn their lives around.”

NKY's largest celebration of new homes begins this weekend

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Cavalcade of Homes begins Saturday, May 4th and features fourteen homes in Northern Kentucky. 

The 2013 Cavalcade of Homes May 4-5, 11-12, and 18-19.  The hours are noon to 5pm each day.  Admission is free. This year’s program will be published by Cincy Magazine and will be available at any home on the Cavalcade of Homes and at Northern Kentucky Kroger locations.

The 2013 Northern Kentucky Cavalcade of Home has gone mobile with a new iPhone app.

An iPhone mobile app will not only guide show goers from home to home with the use of iPhone maps, but provide descriptions of the home, additional photographs of the homes, and information about the builders and their contact information.

iNDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) - The Independence Fire District and Firefighters Local3945 will be having their final Youth Dance for the school year. The dance is for area students in grades 4 through 8.

The dance will be held at The Independence Fire District, Station # 1 at 1980 Delaware Crossing. The dance will begin at 7pm and runs through 10pm on Friday, May 3.

Admission is $5.00 at the door and concessions are available for $1.00 each at the dance.

All proceeds from this event goes toward firefighter wellbeing, safety and training.

Several local neighborhoods participating in World Labyrinth Day

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - From Loveland to Northern Kentucky and from Delhi to Milford, the community is invited to walk Greater Cincinnati labyrinths from 1-2 p.m. in celebration of World Labyrinth Day, on Saturday, May 4.

No reservations are necessary and walking the labyrinths is free.

A labyrinth is  a unicursal (single) path on the ground, usually circular in shape, which is used as a walking meditation, for self-reflection, and as a way to reduce stress.

World Labyrinth Day is an annual global event celebrated each year on the first Saturday in May
