COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - A new sport is coming to Covington Catholic High School for the 2013-14 school year.

Wrestling has been added to CovCath's athletic program. Mr. Dave Johnson has been selected as head coach. Coach Johnson has thirteen years of experience and has coached at the varsity high school level for the last eight seasons contributing to programs at Norwood (OH) High School, Cooper (KY) High School, and most recently as a varsity assistant at Ryle (KY) High School. The addition of wrestling will complement basketball, bowling and the swim/dive programs during the winter sports season and provide another activity for student participation.

About sixty-two students have expressed their interest. “I am excited about the opportunity to be the Colonels wrestling coach. I will work diligently to make this sport a success at CovCath and to represent the school with class and sportsmanship,” noted Coach Johnson.

UK legend signing autographs on Saturday

University of Kentucky basketball legend Terrence Jones will be at Skyline Tavern signing autographs for the public from 7:00 to 8:30 this Saturday.

Autographs are $20, which will include a picture if you don't have anything else you want signed.

The first 50 people will be entered to win a chance to play one on one with Terrence in NBA2k13.

Local adult swimmers make waves at national meet

KY (FOX19) - Two area adult swimmers competed at the United States Masters Swimming Short Course National Championships held at the famed IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, IN.  

Over May 9-12th, Loretta Race (Independence, KY) placed 5th in her age group in the Women’s 100 Butterfly, while Chad Ashmore (Cincinnati, OH) placed 6th in his age group in the Men’s 1000 Freestyle. 

Loretta and Chad represented the Northern Kentucky Swordfish Masters (NKSM) team at the event.  NKSM is a start-up U.S. Masters Swimming program currently training at Silverlake - “The Family Place” in Erlanger, KY.

Special Olympics flag football season kicks off this weekend

CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY (FOX19) - The 2013 Special Olympics Kentucky Flag Football season kicks off this Sunday, April 21, with the Northern Kentucky Regional Flag Football Tournament at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills.

This year 23 teams will compete in seven divisions at the Tournament. The first games of the day will begin at 9 am and the day’s last games are scheduled at 2 pm.

Flag Football is the most recent addition to Special Olympics Kentucky’s year-round sports calendar. The program was first offered in the fall of 2010 as a one-day tournament, but was added as a full-time sport in 2012. This is a record-setting year for the Flag Football program with 30 teams from throughout the state competing.

The season concludes with the State Championship tournament at the 2013 Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games, June 1 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

Holmes HS senior signs letter of intent to attend Kentucky State University

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Holmes High School senior Abby Moore signed her Letter of Intent on Wednesday to attend Kentucky State University on a volleyball scholarship.

 Abby not only received an $8,000 athletic scholarship, but also an academic scholarship that is valued at more than $24,000 over four years.

"I’m really excited about it,’’ Abby said.

Abby has played volleyball since sixth grade. She was joined at her signing by her parents and other relatives, coaches, classmates and the principal and athletic director of Holmes High School.

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Blake Bir and D.J. Powell committed to play football in college during National Signing Day on February 6.

Blake Bir will attend the University of Dayton on a football scholarship.  Bir was a three-year starter at quarterback. He threw for 7598 yards passing and eighty-eight  touchdowns. He had 420 yards rushing including six touchdown runs. Bir broke all school passing and total offense records. He is the son of Teresa and Tony Bir of Union.

D.J. Powell will attend Thomas More College where he will play for the Saints. He was a three-year starter at linebacker.  Powell had 202 career tackles and twenty-nine tackles for loss, eight sacks and one interception. He is the son of Lisa Powell of Erlanger and Donald Powell of Erlanger.

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Covington Catholic’s 32nd Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is scheduled for January 30 at The Gardens of Park Hills. Inductees include alumni Tim Grogan ’02, Jarod Kees ’98 and Ben Schreiber ’97 and longtime school supporter Dennis Walsh.

Tim Grogan, Class of 2002, was a two-year starter for football at quarterback and led the team to the state semi-finals his senior year. He set numerous records and was named Northern Kentucky Player of the Year by The Enquirer. Grogan also was a rare four-year starter in baseball. He was a member of the state championship team in 2002 and was named Player of the Year by The Enquirer his junior year.
